SAN FRANCISCO, CA, [June 17, 2025] -- Jamestown, a design-focused real estate investment and management firm, today announced that Levi’s Plaza, a nearly one-million-square-foot office campus located on San Francisco’s Embarcadero, has officially achieved net zero operational carbon. The milestone makes Levi’s Plaza the first existing, large-scale commercial campus in San Francisco to achieve net zero carbon operations, providing a model for decarbonization in urban office settings.

"Net zero operational carbon isn't just an environmental milestone—it's a competitive positioning strategy,” said Michael Phillips, President of Jamestown. “Modern companies are actively seeking places that align with their own ESG goals and our work at Levi's Plaza positions the property to meet that desire. As we see more AI startups and innovation companies choosing the Northern Waterfront, this investment ensures we're aligned with the businesses that will be significant players in San Francisco's next economic chapter."

“San Francisco’s climate goals were never just about targets—they were about transformation. We set them in partnership with our community, believing not only that net zero was possible, but that it was essential for our city’s resilience, relevance, and leadership,” said Tyrone Jue, Director of the San Francisco Environment Department. “Jamestown’s achievement at Levi’s Plaza proves what we’ve always known: that bold climate action and economic vitality go hand in hand. This is a blueprint for the future—and a reminder that San Francisco’s spirit of innovation lives on in the buildings and businesses shaping our next chapter."

The clean energy transition at Levi's Plaza was achieved through a more than $50 million property retrofit that included several key measures. Fossil fuel-powered heating systems, including boilers and natural gas HVAC systems, were replaced with energy-efficient electric heat pumps and other electric alternatives as part of comprehensive electrification upgrades. In partnership with Wunder, Levi's Plaza installed onsite solar infrastructure totaling over 200kW of power across three buildings. The campus also sourced 100% clean energy from CleanPowerSF, which provides electricity entirely from renewable energy projects such as solar or wind in the Bay Area and across California as well as via renewable energy credits using National Green-e Certified Wind RECs generated in the U.S. Remaining emissions were offset through high-quality carbon offsets via the HFC Refrigerant Reclamation Project, certified by the American Carbon Registry, ensuring the use of reputable and impactful offsets.

By removing its onsite reliance on fossil fuels, transitioning heating systems to electric alternatives, and offsetting remaining emissions, Levi’s Plaza is fully aligned with San Francisco’s ambitious climate goals, including net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. With this milestone, Jamestown reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship and the decarbonization of commercial properties globally.

Levi’s Plaza is Jamestown’s first net zero operational carbon asset across its global portfolio, which includes diverse properties in the U.S., South America, and Europe. The milestone is part of Jamestown’s portfolio-wide goal of achieving net zero carbon operations by 2050, reinforcing the company’s commitment to driving sustainable real estate practices across its global footprint.

Located along San Francisco’s Embarcadero in the city’s Northern Waterfront market, Levi’s Plaza was built in 1981 as the corporate headquarters for iconic clothing brand Levi Strauss & Company.  Jamestown acquired the nine-building, 930,000-square-foot campus in 2019 and has since made efforts to preserve the character and significance of the property’s open space, which was designed by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, while also enhancing the site with new amenities and efficiencies for the modern workforce.

Levi's Plaza serves a diverse tenant base that includes Levi Strauss & Company, Snap, and Supercell. The property has recently emerged as part of a growing Northern Waterfront AI innovation hub, attracting startups seeking an environment where collaboration drives breakthrough growth.

The campus offers modern, flexible workspaces with direct Embarcadero access and San Francisco Bay views. Tenant amenities include over three acres of parkland, a newly refurbished rooftop with panoramic Bay and downtown views, bike storage with private showers and towel service, convenient parking garages, and regular programming such as the popular 'Plazapalooza' summer concert series. The location also provides easy access to diverse dining options, including Xica Mexican restaurant, Hillstone, and Off The Grid Food Trucks.
